Well Hello There

Welcome to Beyond The Grommets: the wonders, wanders and what-nots from The Gift Wrap Company Design Studio. Catchy huh?! We are a diverse group of six cheeky young ladies who design all the products found in The Gift Wrap Company’s range (lovingly referred to here on out as TGWC, I hope you can appreciate the short and sweet!).

Referred around the company as “The Boston Studio” in actuality we are not in Boston proper but rather about 40 miles west in a little town called Northborough. Day in and day out we work together (and quite well I happily report) to keep the product line fresh, be innovative and most importantly to create fun designs you all will love to see adorning our products.

So please check in and enjoy our ramblings while we attempt to inspire, educate and maybe even enlighten about the little bits and bites that happen
beyond the grommets.

Paperworld 2012

frankfurt

I wrapped up my European adventure in Frankfurt for the Paperworld/Christmasworld show.

Pleasantly this years show was a bit more interesting then the last couple years has been. There seems to be a little more innovation hitting the market and it seems there has been some focus on raising the bar on design.

COLOR was the “theme” of the show. Color has earned center stage in the recent Fall12 collections and bold uses of strong and vibrant colors will continue to dominate the trend scene into 2013.

The Paperworld trend presentation was sectioned into 3 parts all based on… yup…COLOR!

BRIGHT: the first section was all about vivid color blocking. Common utilitarian objects were arranged by color and fresh new color combos resulted from the overlaps.

Think: Andy Warhol and Georgia O’keefe have a love child.

DARK: the second of the three sections was DARK. This sophisticated masculine grouping of materials and objects were anchored in the dark nuetrals- black, charcole gray, and deep earthy browns. The design here was very subtle with a focus on texture created by the process of creation. The materials were luxurious and sophisticated evoking quality and wealth. This trend story is no renegade against the dominance of color, for found among the tables of rich warm nuetrals were moments of bold contrasting hues which jumped frm the tables and gave a mod edge to the colorless classics.

Think: Urban Hipster swinging in Stockholm.

SOFT: The last of the sections was SOFT. This was my fave of the sections. This collection was very pretty and elegant. A classic 1950′s vibe was given a  modern handmade feel. High quality goods were juxtapositioned with highly personal crafts. As with DARK, SOFT was also built by the nuetrals, but in this case the feminine nuetrals- white, cream, silver. And like with DARK, the mixing of strong colors, in this case bold chalky hues, give life and pop to it’s coordinating pieces.

Think Jackie O shops Paper Source.

Oh so SOFT!

Next up: CHRISTMASWORLD is Coming!

I love all things fuchsia. PMS 226 is the best color in the whole world. I seriously contemplate painting my living room in it every day- ok maybe just one wall! I am hopelessly in love with my 10 year old yellow lab Tyler whom is hopelessly in love with a big red Kong filled with peanut butter (and the pursuit of getting said Kong refilled by me). In my free time I like to get my hands in the dirt and grown stuff (plants, flowers, veggies..), clean my house (odd I know), volunteer at a local dog rescue, take hikes with Tyler and fantasize that I had more free time to do more fun stuff! If I could be anywhere, I would be on a beach, sitting in the sand with my eyes closed just listening to sound of the waves hitting the shore... Total peace!
