"pretty" basic needs

By heidi September 2, 2011.

For my first blog post, I thought I would write about something that I have really been thinking about lately.

We have had a pretty crazy week up here in New England with Hurricane Irene, and I was without electricity for about 4 days. It’s back on now thankfully, but it got me thinking about all the things we need versus all the things we just want.

Things like food, water, electricity, plumbing are all really vital to our health and well-being, but what about things like art and music? Are they less important in our lives?

I think they are more like food for the soul. Sure you can survive without them, but don’t they make life that much sweeter? Have you ever received a gift that was so beautifully wrapped (and I hope you have) that you almost didn't want to open it?

It’s a thoughtfulness you can see. Pretty things, cute things, funny things make us happy. I think today more than ever, with the state of the world, the economy, etc. -we need these kinds of things.

The good news is that a little goes a long way, for example the new throw pillow I bought two months ago still makes me happy. While it may not be as obvious as a working refrigerator, it makes me feel good. The reason we have art, and music, and blogs for that matter is because people need to connect with each other, in my opinion it is as basic a need as any other...
